Songs from the Beautiful City - Jimmy Crowley
Jimmy Crowley is a living legend in Irish music, a central figure in the worldwide folk scene since his debut album The Boys of Fairhill. No-one sounds like him, and few can match him for sheer joy, humour and the storytelling craft which he brings to his repertoire of songs.
Jimmy draws on many traditions to fashion his unique performance style and repertoire, with funny, touching and beautiful songs, essential affidavits of Cork Culture, where the musical richness mirrors the city's cultural diversity - a great trad heritage as well as a legacy of both music-hall vaudeville and high art song.
Many old street names like Cat Lane, Phair’s Cross and Connor’s Glen are almost gone from living memory, as are the colourful individuals who inhabited them. Jimmy gives them life again in our imagination, weaving stories about the characters, maritime exploits and daily life in between the ballads and ditties.
This updated version of last year's hugely successful show will include:
Salonica,
The Coast of Malibar,
The Armoured Car,
The Ballad of Christy Ring,
Cork is the Eden,
Queen of The White Star Line
Opening night: 21 July, then every Wednesday and Thursday during the summer
No-one sounds like Jimmy, and few can match him for sheer joy, humour and the storytelling craft which he brings to his repertoire of songs. He draws on many traditions to fashion his unique performance style and repertoire, with funny, touching and raucous tales, presenting them as essential affirmations of Cork Culture.
